Drains - General Tips

If your pipes are seriously clogged or if you have a septic system, you should seek professional advice and assistance.
If you have a septic system, slow drains could indicate a more serious problem that homemade cleaners cannot remedy.

To avoid clogging up drains, use a drain strainer to trap food particles and unwanted hair.
Collect grease in cans rather than pouring it down the drain.
Pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain weekly to melt fat that may be building up in the drain.
Once a week you can also put some vinegar and baking soda down your drain to break down any fatty deposits and to keep your drains flowing freely and smelling fresh.

Drain Cleaner

1/4 cup baking soda
1/2 cup vinegar
Pour baking soda, followed by vinegar into drain.
Close drain tightly until fizzing stops.
Then flush with a quart of boiling water.

Salt Drain Cleaner

1 cup salt
boiled water
Pour a cup of salt into slow drains.
Follow up with boiling water.
Allow the boiling water and salt to sit in the pipes.
Then rinse it away.
Repeat the process if necessary.

Strong Drain Cleaner

1 cup table salt
1 cup baking soda
1/4 cup cream of tartar
1 cup boiling water
Cold Water.
Mix the baking soda, cream of tartar and table salt together.
To use, pour 1/4 cup of mixture into drain.
Immediately add 1 cup boiling water.
Wait ten seconds.
Then flush with cold water for at least 20 seconds.
Stir each time before using.
Keep in a clean, covered jar.
